Sun Damage To Paint Is Real - Here's What It Looks Like

Your Car Needs Sunscreen Too

With the recent heat wave, now might be a good time to review what kind of damage sun and heat can do to your paint. This past week saw temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, and just as your skin can get sunburned, so can the paint of your vehicle.

The above image is an extreme case, but chances are, you've seen some kind of heat damage to paint before like the below photos >

Sun damage can be the result of not having a vehicle properly washed, coated and protected. A thorough wash gets rid of dirt and grime that can increase the chances of the topcoat being damaged.

As State Farm says in their article "Protect your car from the damaging effects of sun and heat":

  • Wash and dry often. Sun and heat can fade and crack the paint. Frequent washing and hand drying help remove dirt and dust particles that can cause micro scratches and dull your car's finish.

  • Wax your car. A layer of wax between your car's finish and the sun's ultraviolet rays is a great way to help protect it.

As State Farm points out: washing alone won’t always help protect against extreme sun/heat damage, so be sure to consider adding a layer of protection. While they mention wax, the truth is there are better alternatives like Sealant, Ceramic Coatings (like Ceramic Pro) or Paint Protection Film – it’s SPF for your car which has UV protection built in.

What’s Our Sealant Process? At Capitol Shine, our WASH + WAX SEALANT consists of:

  • Paint-Safe Hand Wash and Dry

  • Wipe Trunk and Door Jambs

  • Clean Wheels and Dress Tires

  • Clean Windows and Mirrors Inside and Out

  • Wipe Dashboard and Console

  • Bug and Tar Removal

  • Nano Mitt (Advanced Clay Bar Surface)

  • Dress Outside Plastics and Rubber

  • High-Quality Silica Spray Sealant

Paint Protection Film: Why would one choose film over a protective coating? Actually, the majority of our customers who receive film also have a protective coating applied on top of the film for even greater protection. Another reason our customers choose to wrap their vehicle in film is because of the variety of colors offered. Imagine changing your vehicle’s color while preserving the original paint underneath. The film can be removed at a later time and return the vehicle to its factory color. We offer different packages of film wrapping for different areas of your vehicle. Other Tips for Car Protection Against the Sun

  • Park in the shade when you can to reduce paint and interior damage.

  • Check your tires! Extreme heat can mix with under inflated tires and cause a blowout.

  • Use a sunshade for the windshield. This can help protect your dashboard from cracking as well as reduce the overall temperature of your vehicle’s interior.

  • Consider installing window tint from Capitol Shine (see here), which can help block UV rays.

  • A protective coating, like Sportcoat Pro or Ceramic Pro can also help block UV rays from doing damage to your vehicle’s paint.

  • Use a car cover when your vehicle is parked for longer periods of time.

  • Did we mention getting a wash and wax sealant for your vehicle?
